The way you represent the world through what you see, smell hear, taste and touch are known in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) as representational systems.
Your representational systems or senses feed your habits. In fact some psychologists argue that all human behavior is learned through your representational systems.
Your Subconscious Mind
Your mind works similar to a computer but instead of having information typed in through a keyboard, information is absorbed through your senses. This is known as input. Your reactions to your inputs are fed back to your brain through your muscles, nerves and reflexes.
Children learn that certain words evoke specific responses. These words are linked, often for the rest of his or her life, with the images he or she hears, tastes, sees, smells or touches is recorded in their senses is absorbed and elicits images and reactions.
Your response to this sensory input is known as output.
Your Inputs and Outputs
Your conscious and subconscious minds are constantly concerned with both your inputs and outputs.
For example, for some people the word "dog" brings to mind a positive image, for others it can bring a negative image, depending upon their previously acquired impressions. These are stored in your subconscious mind.
To a child once frightened by a big, angry dog, it would represent a frightening memory. To a child that had a big, friendly pet in their house it would bring about a happy memory.
Automatic Reactions
Your brain has been trained to behave habitually or in a ritualized pattern through image-recall. Throughout the day your brain flashes images for your consideration.
Your brain mixes the images you pick up from your our immediate environment with old images. This means you can react to new situations using old patterns. This means your negative associations can control your present behavior.
This is why it's important for you to develop the ability not let reactions cause you to react habitually.
Using Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques to Shift Your Thinking You can shift your negative thinking patterns by using Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques to interrupt your habitual reactions. NLP does this by shifting your focus to a more desirable behavior, weakening your old behavior's hold on your mind.
This is the key process that can help change a harmful habit like smoking or overeating into a more empowering one.
Why Not Start Using Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques Today
While Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques doesn't take away your habits, it can help you replace your bad habits with good ones. It helps break the reactions stored in your subconscious mind so you can develop the habits you want and enjoy the life you deserve.
